How to Discern Demonic Objects

Is it possible that objects could have the power to hinder our walk with the Lord?

I believe that there are certain objects that are deemed demonic and can expose people to demonic spirits. But how can you objectively determine if something is demonic? Here are a few things to consider.

Learning to Discern Correctly

When trying to decide whether an object within your home is demonic or not, we can use these four sources as guidance.

1. The Bible

It shouldn’t come as a surprise to us that Scripture doesn’t remain silent on this topic. In fact, we see in Exodus 20:1-5 and 1 Kings 14:22-24 that God explicitly warns His people not to have things in their possession that represented pagan worship or images that they worshipped which represented Him.

We see throughout the Bible many examples demonstrating that God is not silent about this area. There were and still are things that should not be in our homes and in our possession because they go against what is already written in Scripture.

2. The Holy Spirit

It’s obvious that as the world is evolving, there are new things that we have now that hadn’t been invented in Scripture times. Now, just because the Bible may not specifically state “ouija board,” it doesn’t mean that it’s permissible.

God didn’t just leave us His manual. He also left us His Spirit to help guide us to all truth while we are on this earth. When trying to get guidance on an issue, I would encourage you to pray in tongues until you sense the presence of the Lord. Once you have done that, try on that questionable shirt, play that movie that you doubt is demonic, or set up that little statue or object that you purchased while on vacation.

Then, wait and see if the Holy Spirit withdraw’s His manifest presence from you. If there’s no change, then continue watching that movie or doing that thing. But, if you sense the Holy Spirit withdraws His manifest presence, then you have your answer. Get rid of it.

3. Common Sense

If you’re still unsure then just do a little research. Discover where it came from, what it represents, what it was intended for. And, just use your reasoning. Does it make sense for someone like you to have that in your home or on your body? Some things like tarot cards and ouija boards are easier to discern with common sense since they encompass darkness and are supernatural in nature. For things that you may be doubting, research.

4. Church Tradition

And lastly, Proverbs 11:14 says that there is wisdom in counselors. If you are still unsure about the nature of an object, a song, or a souvenir in your home, another test is to think about what your church holds to be the standard regarding that. I would encourage you to even ask what church history says on the matter and listen to the debates that have taken place regarding those objects. For instance, there were Reformed Churches that forbid images of Jesus in their homes because it was seen as worshipping an image.

I pray these 4 avenues help you to make the best decision as you remove things from your home.

Memorizing Scripture is not just for leaders, it is a part of our discipleship as Christians. Each believer should make it a habit to not just live in God's Word, but to have God's Word live inside of them.
