A Dark Spiritual Side of ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is a type of AI that can have conversations with people. However, many experts are concerned that AI will develop quickly and threaten human existence. Is science fiction becoming a reality? This creates several important questions for Christians to ask: Do watchers from the Book of Enoch play a role in this technological development? What should Christians keep in mind as these technologies develop?

A Step Towards the Mark of the Beast?

Neuralink, one of Elon Musk’s companies, is working on embedding chips into human brains the size of a coin. An array of tiny wires from the chip, each roughly 20 times thinner than the human hair, fan out into the patient’s brain.

Elon Musk’s Neuralink already has FDA approval for human study of brain implants. For Christians, this is a correlation to the Mark of the Beast described in Revelation 13:16-18.

This has been the idea of science fiction writers in the past, but now that AI is really here and is developing really fast, we have come to grips with the possibility that the rest of science fiction might soon be the new reality.

Fallen Angels Teaching Mankind

Now, something that is worth noting is that in the Book of Enoch, an extra-biblical and Jewish religious text, the fallen angels taught mankind about technology. In the Book of Watchers, a section within this text, a group of fallen angels called the watchers descend to earth and begin teaching forbidden knowledge to humanity. This knowledge included various forms of technology, such as metalworking, cosmetics, and sorcery.

Now I believe in the presence of demons and the idea they still deceive humankind and teach them various things. However, I don’t believe that AI is evil in itself. It could have the potential to be used wrongfully. As we see these dangerous and rapid technological developments, here are a few things to think about.

Five Considerations for Christians

1. The Bible Predicts that Knowledge Will Increase in the Last Days

The Book of Daniel (12:4) prophesied that knowledge will increase in the end times. The advances in AI, even in its baby stage, are a testament to this prophecy.

2. The Bible Warns Us About Bad Things Coming to the Earth

Scripture like 2 Peter 3:10, warns us of the horrific events that will take place, including the heavens and earth being destroyed by fire. Seeing the AI’s potential to arm nuclear weapons could be a stepping stone towards this disaster.

3. The Bible Says that the World is Foolish in Its Wisdom

The world wants to create a system where we can live forever, so we don’t need God to tell us what to do. In fact, some want to use this new technology to create new ideas, rewrite the Bible, and make a perfect religion that does not have any mistakes. But the Bible is very clear that it is appointed unto man to die and then the judgment (Hebrews 9:27).

4. Whatever We Do, We Must Do it for God’s Glory

As 1 Corinthians 10:31 states, whatever we do, we should do it for God’s glory. Even if AI itself is not evil, the intent behind its use can be. Whatever we do, we must do it with this one lens: Is this bringing God glory? Is this glorifying Jesus, or is this going in rebellion against His Word?

5. Humanity Is Not to Play God

Playing God is a very dangerous game (Romans 12:19). Because we have rejected God as a culture, we erect ourselves as God and are making technologies that can potentially destroy and rule our lives. We should seek to innovate and improve our existence, but it is naive to believe that we can reach immortality.

Final Thoughts

As Christians, we must remain vigilant. Remember to use the intellect and creativity God has given to glorify Him and further His kingdom rather than to replace or oppose Him.

How to Memorize Scripture

Memorizing Scripture is not just for leaders, it is a part of our discipleship as Christians. Each believer should make it a habit to not just live in God's Word, but to have God's Word live inside of them.
