6 Signs of an Ungodly Soul Tie

A soul tie is a strong spiritual and emotional connection you have with someone after being intimate with them, usually after engaging in sexual intercourse, though its formation is not limited to sexual acts. It’s interesting to note that there are good soul ties and there are bad soul ties. In Genesis, we read that Jacob’s life was tied to his son Benjamin.

And now, my lord, I cannot go back to my father without the boy. Our father’s life is bound up in the boys life.

Genesis 44:30

Here, Judah is saying that his father would die if they returned home without Benjamin, which is an indicator of an unhealthy soul tie. On the other hand, we have the example of David and Jonathan.

Now when he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.

1 Samuel 18:1

This was a healthy soul tie because we do not see that David desired death as a result of Jonathan’s death.

Your soul is important to God and God wants you to worship Him with all of your soul (Matthew 22:37). However, it is difficult to do so if your soul is fragmented and broken into pieces that belong to different people. But God desires to restore your soul.

“He restores my soul…For His name’s sake”

Psalm 23:3

It’s important to understand that when the devil attacks us, he not only attacks our spirit and body. But also our soul through the formation of ungodly soul ties. These are the signs that could help you identify an ungodly soul tie in your life.

The 6 Main Types

1. You have an unhealthy attachment to a person

This can be in a relationship with anyone. It does not have to be a romantic relationship, however, that is very common. The example of Jacob with his son Benjamin is an unhealthy attachment (Genesis 44:30) because if Benjamin would have died, then Jacob would have too. It is not a healthy way to live your life depending on the life of another.

Parents love their children, but if something happens to your child and you cannot live anymore, that is not a good soul tie.

2. You are obsessed with a person

This usually implies an obsession with someone in authority, like a pastor or a mentor. Or it could be an obsession with someone you were in a relationship with. If the relationship is over and years have passed, but you are constantly thinking about that person and feel like you cannot live without them, then that is another example of an unhealthy soul tie.

3. You are taking on the traits of another person

An unhealthy soul tie can lead you to adopt the addictions, attitudes, and even certain mannerisms of the person to whom you are attached. You may notice that sometimes you act, talk, and behave like them, to the point of experiencing the same problems as the other person.

This soul tie can be dangerous because it can result in attacks from demons. It is as if you have part of that person’s soul in you.

4. You are remaining in an abusive relationship

Another sign of a bad soul tie is if you remain in an abusive relationship and defend that person’s harmful behavior. In many cases, people on the outside can see the abuse and warn you, but you are stuck and do not understand why.

It may due to emotional and spiritual soul ties that need to be broken.

5. Dreams, thoughts, and fantasies about someone from your past

If you are having reoccurring thoughts, dreams, and fantasies about your past with someone, it may be caused by a soul tie to that person. This can be about anyone: a parent, friend, previous relationship, or even a pastor.

6. You keep objects from your past

The last sign is that you have kept items from your past that you cannot get rid of because you are obsessed with or too attached to them.

For example, these objects can include jewelry, notes, pictures, cards, or any gifts from that attachment. Those objects are still in your possession and are keeping you connected to that person.

Final Thoughts

If you read this and the Holy Spirit made you realize that you have an ungodly soul tie to someone, I want to encourage you.

Firstly, repent and ask the Lord to forgive you for allowing yourself to remain attached to someone, through sexual sin or other things you were involved in.

Secondly, extend forgiveness to the person who may have taken advantage of you or lied to you.

Thirdly, throw away any items that still connect you to that person. Then, renounce that soul tie, renounce the power and influence that the person has over your heart and soul. It will be helpful to reconnect with believers, friends, a small group, and family to develop healthy relationships to grow.

Lastly, the most important thing to focus on is to love Jesus with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. Allow God to bring full healing to your heart by giving it all to the Lord, and let Jesus be the object of your affection, obsession, and pursuit.
