5 Reasons To Read Your Bible

When I was dating my wife (girlfriend at the time), we lived in different cities. Our main source of communication was via text. Within the first month of talking, I fell deeply in love with her. During that first month alone I realized that I had sent her over 9000 text messages!

I didn’t send all those texts because I loved texting but because I loved her and this was the means to be able to communicate with her.

The same idea lies in our relationship with God. He also texts us and communicates with us constantly through the 31,173 verses in the Bible from Genesis to Revelation. He communicates with us when we read and meditate on His Word. There are many Christians who struggle to open up their Bible and I believe a large part of that is because they don’t understand the importance of the Bible and their need for it.

5 Reasons To Read Your Bible Daily

The Bible reveals Jesus Christ.

Scripture tells us that the first commandment is to,

Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.

Matthew 22:37

Jesus desires for us to get well acquainted with Him, and the Bible is the best way to do that. We also see in John 5, that Jesus tells us to study the Scriptures because they reveal who He is to our hearts.

You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about Me.

John 5:39

Our goal with reading Scripture is not to fall in love with the Bible but to fall in love with God. When you find yourself falling more in love with the idea of reading the Bible and just wanting to post cool pictures of it on social media, rather than just loving God Himself, you are missing the point. Loving the idea of God is different that loving God.

The Pharisees did a similar thing. They memorized the Old Testament Scriptures yet they crucified its author! This shows that it is possible to know the Bible and miss God, but if you study the Bible with the help of the Holy Spirit He will always help you to love God more.

Don’t just read the Bible, fall in love with the Author!

The Bible helps you to conquer sin.

Psalms says,

“I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.”

Psalms 119:11

You’ll notice that when you begin to live in God’s Word, you receive the courage to say no to sin and your flesh. You also receive power to uproot the sin and immoral weaknesses hiding in your life.

If you are struggling with personal sins, evaluate your intake of the Word of God.

If you are struggling with personal sins, you need to evaluate your intake of the Word of God. Are you pouring Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube into your spirit instead of God’s Word?

Remember that the preachings you listen to are only a supplement to your personal spiritual growth. The actual source of victorious living comes from letting the Bible soak into your heart.

Preachings from your favorite pastor should be a supplement, not your main source of God’s Word.

The Bible is a sword for the believer.

According to Ephesians, the Bible is your weapon of defense against the ungodly influences around you.

Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Ephesians 6:17

Even though this verse makes it clear that every Christian has a sword that they can use at any time, many Christians choose to be easily swayed and disturbed by their wavering emotions. The Bible says in Psalms that,

He trains your fingers for battle and your hands for war.”

Psalms 144:1

The Word of God is a double-edged sword (Hebrews 4:12), but if you don’t study your Bible every day you won’t know how to use it. Then when temptations come you will quote your feelings rather than God’s Word.

Don’t quote your feelings, declare God’s Word.

We often hear Christians who are quick to say, “God told me…” yet Jesus said, “It is written.” I encourage all believers to live by Jesus’ words and declare “it is written.”

When you study and memorize the Word, it will come out of you with authority during battle just like a sword. The battle will become your breakthrough and your victory. Don’t give up; use God’s Word to combat the enemy of your soul.

The Bible increases your faith.

In Romans, the Bible tells us that faith comes by hearing God’s Word.

So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Romans 10:17

The Bible builds your inner man and develops your spiritual muscles. Your flesh does not like the Bible because it enjoys only the things that provide superficial entertainment. When people don’t understand its value they end up squandering the benefits that Scripture provides due to laziness.

Quit taking directions from your flesh and get into a healthy, disciplined routine of soaking yourself in the Word of God. In doing so, your spirit will become strong enough to dictate your life. In fact, your flesh must become a slave to your spirit and not the other way round!

The Bible guarantees your success.

This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.

Joshua 1:8

Joshua tells us to study and meditate at least twice a day on the Bible and in doing so our way will be made prosperous. Another Scripture reads,

But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night. He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season, whose leaf also shall not wither; and whatever he does shall prosper.

Psalms 1:2-3

God’s desire is for you to know Him, and for your roots to grow deep in His Word so you can provide fruit for those around you. Reading the Bible is not a religious duty created by Christians; it is the desire for God to have a relationship with us.

Memorizing Scripture is not just for leaders, it is a part of our discipleship as Christians. Each believer should make it a habit to not just live in God's Word, but to have God's Word live inside of them.
