Why God Is Removing Them

Have you ever wondered why certain friendships suddenly ended or why people walked away when you least expected it? What if it wasn’t just rejection, but it was God’s direction? I believe that not every goodbye is a loss, but rather God’s protection at times.

In Proverbs 19:21 the Bible says that “Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.” If people are leaving your life, here may be 5 reasons why the Lord may be removing them.

Reasons They’re Leaving Your Life

1. They are Holding You Back From God’s Purpose (Genesis 13)

In the book of Genesis we read the story of Abraham and Lot. When Lot departed permanently, it allowed Abraham to fully see the promised land. In fact, the word “Lot” means veil, and it was after Lot was gone that the Lord spoke to Abraham, and He said, “Lift up your eyes and begin to walk in this land that I promised you.”

In the same way, people in our lives can come to resemble “Lot,” meaning that we won’t be able to see what God desires from us clearly until they are removed from our lives. I would encourage you to trust God’s leading, even if it’s painful.

2. Their Season in Your Life Has Ended (Acts 15)

Secondly, just because God removes them, it doesn’t mean the process is not painful. For example, in Acts, Paul and Barnabas had a disagreement that led to their separation. However, it eventually led to multiplication (two mission trips instead of one). Sometimes we won’t understand it at the moment, but not all separations are negative.

Now, looking back to an O.T example, think about Jethro’s role in Moses’s calling. If Jethro had not let him go, Moses wouldn’t have helped free the Israelites. He needed to be released.

Similarly, some people in our lives are there for a season and a reason, and when that season ends let them go. Remember that we are all in allegiance to God and trying to serve His purpose. We are simply pieces to a puzzle.

3. God Is Protecting You From Harm (Judges 16)

Another good example of why God removes people from your life comes from the story of Samson and Delilah. He desires to protect us, but when we ignore God’s warning, it brings tragedy.

I like to think about it in this way: What if God is removing certain people because something is happening in the spirit that we’re not seeing? I would encourage you to pay attention to repeated warnings and red flags and embrace God’s protection, even if you don’t fully understand it yet.

4. God Wants Your Full Dependence on Him, Not People (Judges 7)

Another reason people are removed is to sift our hearts. In the story of Gideon, we see that Gideon’s army was reduced from 32,000 to 300 so he would fully depend on Him (Zech 4:6). During seasons like this, God desires that your heart be set on Him. Deepen your prayer life and your personal devotion to Him, and learn to walk through these seasons where others don’t.

5. They Were Meant for Your Past, Not Your Future (Ruth 1)

Lastly, I often think about the story of Ruth. When Orpah left Naomi’s life, Ruth stayed and became part of God’s redemptive plan. This teaches us that we must learn to release relationships that don’t fit our future, and instead, cultivate relationships that are more aligned with our calling and our future, even though they have not been there in our past.

Learn to hold on to God’s calling and get attached to His will. Above all else, make it your aim to please God above your personal comfort, and trust that God will take care of you and surround you with the right people.
