Choosing to start a fast dedicated to the Lord is a huge step in denying our flesh and allowing our spirit to take the lead. However, making the initial choice to fast is just the beginning. It’s important to also remember these key things in order to have an effective fast.

1. Replace Your Eating with the Reading of God’s Word
It’s common to feel distracted, unfocused, tired, or even nauseous and dizzy when you start fasting and try to read God’s Word. These symptoms are normal as your body detoxes and adjusts. During fasts it’s normal to feel tired and have a difficult time spending time in God’s Word. On days like this, I would encourage you to listen to the Bible instead. This is a natural process during a fast and not a spiritual attack.
2. Overcome Physical Challenges with Wisdom and Rest
Next, I want to encourage you to stay hydrated and be patient with your body as it detoxes. Feeling headaches and fatigue are part of the process; your body is undergoing many changes. During this time, do some light activities like going for a prayer walk, which helps you stay active.
3. Remove Distractions
Focus on God’s voice by removing excessive entertainment. it’s important to understand that nothing can hurt your spiritual fast more than consuming entertainment. Focus on watching or listening to things that your spirit and draw you closer to God.
4. Fast in Humility, Not for Recognition
It’s important to keep your fasting private and do it with a sincere heart to draw near to God. When it’s done for external approval, you’ll forfeit the reward. When done for the right reasons, fasting brings spiritual rewards and deepens your relationship with God.
5. Push Through Challenges and Rely on God’s Grace to Complete the Fast
Lastly, remember that you won’t finish the fast on your own strength but by His grace. While perseverance is required, you must learn to come to the end of yourself and lean on His grace to finish the fast.
