The Holy Spirit is the most important Person we can know on this earth. He is gentle, powerful, and always pointing us to Jesus. If we desire to build a relationship with Him it’ll require more than 5 minutes a week. We will need to be intentional, humble, and willing to follow wherever He may lead.
In Genesis 24, Abraham sends his servant on an important mission to find a wife for Isaac and he finds Rebecca at a well and tests her in order to see if she could be the one for Issac. I believe that this unnamed servant is a good picture of the Holy Spirit’s role. Just as the servant’s role was to prepare and bring a bride to Isaac, the Holy Spirit’s role is to prepare and bring the Bride of Christ to Jesus. In this story, we see key tips about how to grow our relationship with the Holy Spirit.
5 Ways to Help Deepen Your Fellowship With the Holy Spirit
1. Understand that the Holy Spirit is the ruler of heaven’s resources.
Like Abraham’s servant who managed all his wealth, the Holy Spirit manages all the resources of Heaven. In other words, miracles, signs, and wonders are His work on earth, but His overall goal is to glorify Jesus and not Himself.
I would encourage people to make it their aim to pursue relationship with Him rather than chasing power or miracles. When He becomes our priority, everything else flows easily (Matthew 6:6).
2. Make time for fellowship with Him.
Secondly, we see in the story that when Abraham’s servant asked Rebecca for water, it wasn’t because he couldn’t get it himself. Instead, it was because he wanted to test her heart. In the same way, the Holy Spirit often comes to us asking for our attention, affection, and time. While He is God, you’ll find that He often asks rather than demands things from us.
I would encourage you to take moments throughout your day to invite Him in, saying things like, “Holy Spirit, help me.” Remember, He convicts, not condemns and He desires mutual communion with you. His voice will bring hope, not hopelessness into any situation.
3. Choose to serve willingly.
As we continue to read through the story, we see that Rebecca not only gave the servant a drink but volunteered to water his camels. This was a huge and exhausting task.
In the same way, take initiative and choose to serve without waiting to be asked. Serving in your local church or community develops humility, character, and maturity in more ways than you know.
But above all else, remember that the gifts of the Holy Spirit are not for fame or power but for effectiveness in serving others.
4. Step out of what is familiar.
We also see in Genesis that after meeting Issac and the servant, Rebecca had to leave her family and the comfort of the known to follow the servant into an unknown future. Likewise, the Holy Spirit will sometimes lead you away from what is comfortable. This may not just be away from harmful things, but also good things that may be holding you back from God’s next step for you.
Real sacrifice often means letting go of the familiar to step into the new season God has prepared. Don’t be afraid to follow when the Lord is the one leading.
5. Walk boldly into the unknown with Him.
Lastly, always remember that following the Holy Spirit requires courage.
The miracles, fresh fire, and new grace are often outside the borders of our routine and Jesus is worthy of everything we fear losing. Your future with Him is worth the risk. Live boldly for Him, wherever He may lead you to go.
