How to Hear God Clearly and Daily

Have you ever wondered why some people clearly hear God’s voice and why others have a harder time? Imagine what your life, your ministry, or your company could look like if you could hear God’s voice every day or sense His guidance. Here are some practical steps you can take to ensure you are hearing the Lord’s voice and taking action on a daily basis.

Keys to Hearing God Daily

1. Position Yourself to Listen

First of all, while most of us desire to hear God speak, not many of us make the time to listen to Him speak. The first important step is to position yourself to listen. In other words, take the time in the morning or throughout the day to turn off your phone and find a quiet place where you can spend time with the Lord. This can often be hard in a house full of people or when you don’t wake up early. In these cases, I would encourage you to go on a walk or hike and take that time to be intentional about encountering the Lord.

Now, it’s also important that as you quiet the physical noise that surrounds you, that you also learn to quiet your soul. The Bible tells us in Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still and know that I am God.” Talk to the Lord about issues on your mind if you find you are too stressed or worried to be still in your heart or mind before the Lord. This is key to positioning yourself to listen.

2. Prioritize God’s Word Daily

Next, it’s important to understand that God speaks to us clearly through the written Word. Reading the Bible daily is what will help sharpen your spiritual hearing.

Set time aside to not just read the Bible but also to meditate on it. Some days it may be while reading, others it can be while listening to it on audio. Whatever method works for you that day, choose to deposit God’s word consistently into your heart and mind. That’s how your hearing becomes sharper.

3. Cultivate an Attitude of Expectancy

Another key step comes with your expectancy. While this step may seem pointless, the desire of your heart matters. Expect God to speak. As we do this, we are acting in faith and faith opens your spiritual ears.

Practice saying things like, “Speak, Lord, your servant is listening,” and then trust in the Lord.

The Bible says that as sheep, we hear His voice (John 10:27). Learn to trust Him and take Him at His word. Some people trust prophetic voices more than in the Holy Spirit who also lives within them. While not every thought we ever have is from God, trust that He speaks to you more than you mishear.

4. Practice Immediate Obedience

Now, it’s also important to remember that hearing God and obeying God go hand in hand.

I would encourage you to act immediately when God speaks. The more we delay our obedience, the more that it dulls our spiritual hearing.

We see this in the life of Saul. When he delayed obeying God, he eventually lost God’s voice (1 Samuel 15). If you want to continuously hear God with clarity, then don’t delay when He prompts you to do something. You’ll notice that as you obey, you will only become more and more sensitive to His voice in other areas of your life as well.

5. Learn to Recognize His Voice

Once you hear a voice that you believe may be God’s voice, I would encourage you to test it. Remember that God’s voice will always align with His word and it is often accompanied by His peace.

When you’re trying to discern, ask yourself if it aligns with the Bible, if it comes against my selfish desires, and if it brings confusion, fear, or peace?

I would also encourage you to ask others you trust, especially on bigger life decisions. Then, take time to write it down and bring it to prayer and allow the Lord to bring more clarity.

6. Ask God to Speak Clearly

Another important key when you’re asking the Lord to speak is His confirmation. This is not doubt, it simply helps us walk in assurance in times when we need it to take the next step in life. The Bible gives us an example of this through Gideon.

When He didn’t know if it was truly God telling Him these specific instructions to follow, Gideon asked for clarity through a specific sign (Judges 6:36-40).

When you sense God is speaking or brining further clarity about a situation you asked about, write that down somewhere. I would highly encourage you to keep a folder of words from others and from the Lord throughout your walk because during hard times you can always look back on these and they serve as a reminder of God’s faithfulness in your life and they increase your faith when you need it.

7. Remove Spiritual Blockages

Lastly, if you’re struggling to hear God, I would encourage you to take some time to think deeply if there is sin you have not repented about or areas/people you have not forgiven. These may seem unrelated at first, but I believe that both of these can often block people’s sensitivity to the Lord’s voice.

Another thing to think about is how you treat people God speaks through like pastors, prophets, mentors. This can also affect your ability to hear Him. Be open to correction and confirmation. Remember that some of the strongest words come through others. If it brings peace and confirmation, receive it and run with it.

I pray these steps brought more clarity as you draw closer to the Lord and trust that He will speak and you will be able to follow His guidance.
