One of the greatest warnings in the Bible is in Revelation 3:15-16, when Jesus says, “I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot.” I wish you were either frigid or hot. Because you are neither chilly nor hot, but rather lukewarm, I will spit you out of My mouth.”
This part should make us stop and think. Jesus did not suggest that He would be a little disappointed with faith that is not strong. He claimed he would not accept it at all. Lukewarm Christianity is dangerous because it pretends to be real religion. It makes us think everything is fine when our hearts are far from God.
In 2 Corinthians 13:5, the Apostle Paul told Christians to “Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith.” “Test yourselves.” That’s what we have to do. Here are seven signs that show you are not really following Jesus as a disciple.
- You Have No Hunger for God
A healthy believer wants to be with God and read His Word. If you don’t read the Bible or pray for days or weeks, your spiritual hunger is going away.
In Matthew 5:6, Jesus declared, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.” Hunger is usually a sign that you are alive. Parents realize something is awry when their child won’t eat. In a spiritual sense, it’s the same.
If you can easily spend hours on social media but find it hard to read the Bible for fifteen minutes, your desire is not in the right place. Not being hungry is one of the most obvious signs of lackluster faith.
- You Compromise with Sin
Instead of running away from sin, lukewarm Christians play with it. They say things like “It’s not that bad” or “God understands” to make their actions seem okay.
But 1 John 3:9 is clear: “No one born of God makes a habit of sinning.” People who believe in God may make mistakes, but sin doesn’t rule their life. When compromise becomes a way of life and conviction diminishes, faith is being put out.
- You Blend In with the World
James 4:4 indicates that being friends with the world means being against God. Lukewarm religion is okay with fitting in. People who don’t know Christ have the same values, entertainment, language, and habits as those who do.
Think about Lot’s wife in Genesis 19. God was saving her from death, yet she still loved Sodom.
If people around you can’t recognize that you’re a disciple of Jesus, it’s not because you’re just normal. It may be because your faith has grown lukewarm.
- You Live Without Prayer
We shouldn’t merely pray when things go wrong; prayer should be a part of our daily lives. It is supposed to be how we talk to the Father every day. Jesus declared in Luke 18:1 that we should never give up and always pray.
Prayer is like breathing for the spirit. You need air to survive, and you need prayer to stay spiritually alive. A life without prayer shows that your faith has chilled.
- You Are Content Without Bearing Fruit
In John 15:8, Jesus said, “By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples.” Real discipleship always bears fruit.
We get lazy when faith is more about getting than giving. If you are happy going to church but never sharing the Gospel, teaching others, or helping in the Kingdom, you are lacking fruit. Jesus condemned a fig tree that had leaves but no figs. It seemed like it was alive, but it wasn’t. That picture shows a lukewarm Christian.
- You’ve Lost Your First Love
Revelation 2:4 says Jesus told the church in Ephesus, “You have left your first love.” Spiritual passion might steadily go away.
Remember the first time you met Christ. The fire was new. You couldn’t stop talking about Him. Worship was something they looked forward to, not something they had to do. Over time, duty can take the place of enthusiasm. Instead of a celebration, church becomes something to do. The fire of first love is replaced with the motions of faith.
- You’re Comfortable with Half-Commitment
People with lukewarm faith are okay with giving God some of their lives but not all of them. It states, “Jesus, I want You to save me, but not to rule over me.”
Jesus said in Luke 9:23, “If anyone wants to follow Me, he must deny himself, take up his cross every day, and follow Me.” You can’t give up partially. Jesus gave His life totally for us, and He asks us to do the same for Him. There is no commitment if you only do half of it.
What Happens When You Are Lukewarm
Faith that is lukewarm is not safe. Jesus remarked in Revelation 3:17 that people who are lukewarm in their faith think they are rich and have all they need, but in reality they are destitute, blind, and naked. This lack of understanding is what makes lukewarm religion so hazardous.
Matthew 7:21–23 says that some people will call Jesus “Lord” but hear Him declare, “I never knew you.” The future is at stake. If you don’t deal with and repent of lukewarm Christianity, it will wreck your spiritual life.
How to Get Your Faith Back
- Repent. Tell God that you have been lazy, and make a choice to change.
- Seek Him daily. Make prayer and reading the Bible a regular part of your life.
- Stay away from sin. Remove the things that always bring you down.
- Serve. Get involved in the work of the Kingdom. Serving keeps your heart alive.
- Surround yourself with fire. Walk closely with those who love God.
