Wearing the Full Armor? Here’s How to Know

The Bible doesn’t say the armor will prevent evil days from coming, but it does help us overcome them when they show up. When we read the verses about the armor of God in Ephesians 6:10–18, we see that it’s listed almost like a checklist. It’s not something we produce but rather it’s a gift we put on to provide us with the strength to withstand spiritual battles.

Here are some questions to ask yourself that will help you discern if you are placing it on properly.

The Armor of God

1. Belt of Truth

First off, are you aligning your thoughts and actions with God’s Word? Are you rejecting lies, deception, and false teachings? Do you live and speak with integrity? It’s important as believers to walk in truth in all aspects of our lives and in our interactions with others. This allows the belt of truth to provide the protection it is intended to. The belt holds other armor pieces. Without it, you cannot carry the rest.

2. Breastplate of Righteousness

Next, as yourself if you are you living in obedience to God’s will and pursuing righteousness instead of compromise? Are you quick to repent when you sin?

I want to emphasize that this isn’t just about the gift of righteousness we have after receiving Christ; it’s also about choosing to live an intentionally righteous life every day. Disobedience leaves you exposed to demonic oppression. When you stay in sin or condemnation, you’re putting off the breastplate, and your heart becomes vulnerable to attack.

3. Shoes of the Gospel of Peace

Another important thing to ask yourself is if you feel at peace with God and others. Do you sense you are ready to stand firm in faith no matter what trials come? Are you spreading the message of hope when you get a chance? Remember that a warrior without shoes is ineffective. This is an essential part of the Christian walk.

4. Shield of Faith

I would also encourage you to think about your level of trust in God. Do you trust God’s promises despite your circumstances? Are you resisting doubt, fear, and discouragement when it comes? In the armor of God, the shield protects you from enemy arrows. In other words, having faith doesn’t mean ignoring reality but rather refusing to live under its influence.

Practically, it means that instead of letting thoughts of fear and defeat remain when you sense them, you use your faith in God and His Word to act as a shield that protects your mind and heart from allowing those thoughts to take root.

5. Helmet of Salvation

Next, the helmet God gives us helps to protect our thoughts. Instead of wearing a hat of guilt and shame, wear the helmet that reminds you: that you are a new creation, saved by Christ, and filled with purpose. Even when your body is sick, your mind stays protected by the truth. Take time to ask yourself if you are renewing your mind daily with the Word of God and choosing to reject fear and condemnation.

6. Sword of the Spirit

Another important aspect of the armor is the sword. The sword hangs on the belt, connected to truth. It’s not about owning a Bible but about using it. The word of God has power, and the Holy Spirit is committed to making it work in your life. Ask yourself, do you actively read, meditate, and declare the word of God over your life and your family? Do you speak God’s word to your situation, to yourself, and to the enemy? Doing so allows you to fight off with truth anything the enemy may be sending your way.

7. Praying in the Spirit

Lastly, Paul encourages us to pray in the Spirit. Prayer is where battles are won. It’s where we apply the armor of God as a whole. Take time to ask yourself if you are praying daily, interceding for others, and sensitive to the Spirit’s leading.

Final Thoughts

The Bible doesn’t tell us that we must “win,” it says we must “stand.” This means the battle is already won through Christ.

Ephesians says “on the evil day” — not the evil month. That means the intense battles don’t last forever. If you put on the armor, keep praying, stand on God’s promises, and walk in righteousness, the enemy eventually gives up. The evil day will end. Stay strong.
