What do we as Christians do about the environment, climate change? I know that in the recent years these topics have become more and more popular, especially among young people. But what does the Bible say? And how should we respond to it?
Global Warming and What the Bible Says About the End
1. We are caretakers of the earth, but we are not to worship it
The Bible makes it clear in Genesis 1:18 that we’re called to have dominion over creation. This is an important point to make in our culture as it often encourages us to worship “mother nature.”
When we see the job of the first human created, we see that Adam was a gardener. In the same way, our job is to be good stewards of what we’ve been given. As Christians we believe that the environment has value because it is God’s creation. The earth is under our care and, therefore, it is to be used responsibly for our benefit.
2. Worship the Creator God, not the creation
Secondly, we must understand that our culture is constantly drifting further and further from God and Scriptural foundations. People are replacing Father God with mother nature and this is exactly what Paul warned us about (Romans 1:25) stating that people would exchange the truth of God for a lie and worship the creature rather than the Creator.
Environmentalism has become a form of religion where the planet takes the place of God. However, this view is important to understand as believers and actively reject. Our devotion and attention belongs to the God the Creator.
3. Human life is valued above animal and plant life
It’s also important for us to understand that as humans, we are made in the image of God while animals are not. Genesis 1:29 shows us that people were initially vegetarians, and eating meat came after the fall. Now, animals should be treated with dignity; however, they don’t have the same rights as humans. I believe that any culture that values animal life above human life isn’t holding a biblical worldview.
4. Our view on end times shouldn’t encourage the destruction of the earth
Additionally, while the earth will face judgment and be renewed, it doesn’t justify intentionally neglecting the world we live in now. Just like our future resurrected body doesn’t justify abusing our body today. We’re still called to care for it.
5. Technology and cities are not evil
It’s also important to remember that building cities and using resources isn’t sinful. In fact, it’s part of our dominion mandate. Why? because God gave us trees, not chairs. In other words, He calls us to partner with Him in creation, using resources wisely and creatively.
6. Humans will be held accountable for what they do to the earth
The Bible also tells us in Revelation 11:18 that God will destroy those who destroy the earth. We’ll give an account for how we used what He gave us. This is true for our bodies, our words, our time, and this planet. Stewardship includes the earth.
7. God will remake all that humans and the devil wickedly harmed, damaged, and destroyed
Lastly, the Bible tells us in Revelation 21 and 22 that God promises us a new heaven and new earth. One day, God will make all things new. However, until that happens, we are called to honor Him in how we treat His creation. Remember, we don’t worship the planet we worship the One who made it. We protect what He values, and we look forward to the day He restores it all.
