Lust and temptation are real, but so is freedom. If you’re struggling with pornography or sexual sin, you’re not alone, and you’re not beyond help. During times of addiction, it’s important to remember that God doesn’t shame you; rather, He invites you to heal and He gives you the tools to walk in freedom.
Here are three principles found in Scripture that can be used to reject lust and walk in purity.
How to Win the War on Porn
1. Reject Lust by Setting Clear Boundaries
First off, the Bible tells us in Genesis 39 about Joseph and Potiphar’s wife. In the story, she pressured him every day, but Joseph refused to sleep with her. He stayed out of her way and when temptation got close, he ran. This story gives a perfect outline for how we must act.
That’s how we win:
- Refuse lust in your mind before it becomes action.
- Stay out of its path. Don’t play with fire.
- And most importantly: run. Don’t reason, don’t justify, just flee.
Scripture says in Proverbs 1:17, “If a bird sees a trap being set, it knows to stay away.” In other words, do you see the traps being set? Maybe it’s that DM from someone who isn’t your spouse. Maybe it’s being alone with your boyfriend or girlfriend. Maybe it’s your phone in the bathroom.
Whatever it is, it’s important to remember that temptation doesn’t come all at once. It’s compromise after compromise until you wonder, “How did I get here?” The enemy waits for an opening. He studies your weaknesses, but God’s Word warns us: “When you demolish an old wall, you could be bitten by a snake” (Ecclesiastes 10:8). That wall is your boundary.
You don’t need to have it all figured out, but you do need to draw the line.
Don’t let rejection, heartbreak, or loneliness lower your standards. Guard your heart. Set your boundaries.
2. Reject Lust by Protecting Your Eyes
Another important thing to remember is that temptation is everywhere from social media, to the gym, and even work. However, just because it’s around you doesn’t mean it has to live in you. Job 31:1 says, “I made a covenant with my eyes not to look lustfully at a young woman.”
I believe one of the biggest lies the enemy tells us is that we can keep looking and it won’t affect us. But the truth is, it always does. Just like you’d wear safety glasses using a weed whacker, you need protection for your eyes spiritually. The moment we let our pride say, “I can handle this,” we open ourselves to destruction.
Psalm 101:3 says, “I will set no worthless thing before my eyes.” That means anything that causes you to sin, pushes you away from God, or affects your purity.
3. Reject Lust by Seeking God Daily
Lastly, I want to encourage you to spend time in the Word. You can’t obey the Word if you’re not reading it and you can’t walk in purity without staying connected to Jesus. It’s not about willpower, it’s about staying in His presence. The Bible makes it clear in Psalm 119:9, “How can a young person stay pure?” And answers, “By obeying your word.”
Freedom doesn’t come from trying harder. It comes from seeking God daily through prayer, fasting, worship, and the Word. It comes from being surrounded by a godly community, living in repentance, and from taking one faithful step at a time.
Whatever you’re battling today, remember that God can rebuild what’s been broken. Your past does not define your future. Don’t let cravings kill your calling. Set boundaries. Protect your eyes. Seek God daily. He’s not finished with you yet.
