When God Separates You, He’s Preparing You

Have you ever noticed how the Bible begins? “In the beginning, God…” (Genesis 1:1). I believe this statement teaches us something very powerful about how God often works in our lives.

I’ve noticed that when someone puts the Lord first in their day, their week, or their finances, His grace begins to flow into every other area of their life as well. The Bible tells us the truth of this principle in Matthew 6:33 stating, “Seek first the kingdom of God…”. In other words, if you want God to begin creating something new in your life, He must come first.

However, before God brings fulfillment, He often takes us through a process and it deals with different areas of our life (based on the story of creation).

The Process of Preparation

1. When Everything is Dark, The Holy Spirit is Near (Day 0)

First off, it’s okay to feel empty or lost sometimes, but know that you’re not alone. Genesis 1:2 says that “The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering…” This was day “zero.”

In the same way, at one point in your life you may feel empty, lost, stuck in addiction, or trauma. However, it’s important to remember that during these times the Holy Spirit is still near. Just as He hovered in Genesis, even in the darkness, He hovers over you. Remember that you’re not alone.

2. Light Without a Source (Day 1)

As we continue to read the book of Genesis, we see that there came a day when God said “‘Let there be light’ and there was light” (Genesis 1:3). Even though there was no sun yet, there was illumination because it was God who brought the light before He brought the source (sun). In the same way, God often gives us a promise before He shows us the evidence of that word in our lives. His Word alone brings peace, warmth, and joy because it means the promise is coming.

3. Separation (Day 2)

On day two of creation (Genesis 1:6–8) we see that God begins to separate. Now, He doesn’t bring the sun, moon, or stars yet at this point. Instead, He brings division. He starts separating waters and setting boundaries.

Similarly, there are times in our lives where God beings to separate things. He may remove things, people, or habits that don’t belong in our lives. This process is often painful, but it’s preparation.

Separation protects, propels, and positions you for the next thing God has in store. Trust Him during the pruning season.

4. Formation (Day 3)

The next day in creation, we see that God begins to form (Genesis 1:9–13). He forms roots before fruits. This is an important distinction. Day three is about development. In our lives, this sort of slow process allows for the formation of our character to sustain the promise that is over our lives.

During this season, I would encourage you not to ask, “Why is this happening?” but instead, “What are You developing in me, Lord?” I want to remind you that God will often refine us before He releases us.

5. Fulfillment (Day 4)

Lastly, the sun, moon, and stars finally appear (Genesis 1:14–19). Notice that what was unseen on day one finally becomes visible on day four. In other words, no matter how slow it may seem, know that the fulfillment comes as promised.

Now, it’s also important to remember that the fulfillment of a promise is given for the purpose of serving. Like Joseph, we are blessed to be a blessing. When the fulfillment of what you have been praying for finally comes to pass, remember that it’s meant to be a platform to glorify God with your influence, wealth, and calling.

Wherever season you are in, remember that God is working. He finishes what He starts. Don’t give up. Don’t shrink the promise to match your problem. Trust the One who spoke the light.
