I believe that there are many dangerous things a Christian should steer clear of, but among the most dangerous is not what initially comes to mind for many. Comfortable Christianity, I believe is even more dangerous than atheism and witchcraft, and here is why.
The danger with this lies in its deceiving nature. It whispers: “You can follow Jesus without denying yourself.” “You don’t have to change.” This sort of lie causes a believer to think that God’s grace means He understands our sin and is okay with us not choosing to stop, rather than understanding that He empowers us to overcome it.
Satan Wants You to Be Comfortable
I believe that the Bible talked about these times, stating that people will reject sound doctrine for what pleases their itching ears (2 Timothy 4:3–4).
He’ll give you a feel-good version of Christianity that does no good. This sort of belief replaces conviction with convenience, discipleship with digital content, and spiritual parents with influencers. The result of this trade is a faith that ends up inspiring people, but never really transforms them at the core.
John the Baptist told us as believers that we are to “Bear fruits worthy of repentance” (Matthew 3:8). This means our life should be a testament of God’s love and His saving power to change our lives and empower us to live holy after Him.
How You Know You’re in the Trap
Remember, Satan wants you to hate God, but if he can’t make that happen, he will strive to make you lukewarm (Revelation 3:16). These are a few danger signs you may want to be aware of if you sense these beginning to happen in your life.
1. You repost verses but haven’t read your Bible in weeks.
2. You love sermons on destiny, but avoid discipline.
3. You’re defensive when corrected, but unmoved by conviction.
4. You attend services, but don’t serve.
When you think about your life and the message of the gospel, evaluate it through the following lens. The real gospel is meant to:
- Rescue you – It’s meant to pull you out of sin.
- Refine you – It’s meant to cause a purging of unholy manners of living and thinking.
- Release you – It’s meant to empower you to live like a light for God in the calling He has for you.
Remember, You Were Born to Burn
Faith is more than just a belief. It’s a daily allegiance to God with everything that we are. If you’ve fallen into casual Christianity I want to encourage you to wake up and repent. It’s not too late. The way to get your fire for God back is to repent and return to the same acts you did before when you added fuel to the fire (Romans 12:1).
Don’t just consume Christian content. Be a carrier of His presence.
This isn’t radical Christianity. This is normal Christianity.
