Friends, today I share heartbreaking news. On September 10, 2025, conservative leader Charlie Kirk was tragically shot and killed while speaking at Utah Valley University. What happened that day was not just a crime; it was an attack that has shaken our nation and reminded us of the cost of standing for truth.
At about 12:10 p.m. MDT, Charlie was speaking during his American Comeback tour when a gunshot rang out from around 200 yards away, reportedly from the rooftop of the Losee Center building. The bullet struck him in the neck, and panic filled the room as people screamed and fled. Authorities first said a suspect was in custody, but later corrected themselves. The shooter is still at large. Despite being rushed for help, Charlie passed away later that day. The FBI and ATF are now leading the investigation.
Charlie was only 31 years old. He founded Turning Point USA in 2012, building one of the strongest conservative youth movements in America. He inspired young people to stand up for faith, family, and freedom. Whether you agreed with him on every issue or not, his boldness in speaking about Christ and biblical values in a hostile culture was inspiring.
As we reflect on this tragedy, here are five truths that must guide us in this moment.
1. Being an Outspoken Christian in America Is No Longer Perfectly Safe
Our country was founded on freedom of speech and freedom of religion. But today those freedoms are under pressure. Speaking about Jesus and biblical truth can bring ridicule, cancellation, censorship, and now even violence. Jesus told us this would happen: “You will be hated by all for My name’s sake” (Matthew 10:22). Charlie’s death is a sobering reminder that following Christ comes with a cost.
2. We Must Not Allow Fear to Silence Us
Fear is the devil’s weapon. If he cannot destroy the gospel, he will try to silence the messenger. But church history tells us that persecution never stopped the message of Christ; it only spread it further.
The apostles faced terrible deaths: Matthew was slain by the sword, Mark dragged through the streets, Luke hanged in Greece, Peter crucified upside down, Paul beheaded in Rome, Andrew tied to a cross while still preaching until his last breath. They could have saved their lives by staying silent, but they refused. Their courage carried the gospel to the nations.
We must follow their example. As 2 Timothy 1:7 says, “God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”
3. We Grieve with Hope
Yes, we grieve Charlie’s loss. But our grief is different. Paul wrote, “We do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope” (1 Thessalonians 4:13).
Evil struck him down, but evil has not won. Jesus said in John 10:10, “The thief comes to steal, kill, and destroy; but I have come that they may have life, and have it abundantly.” Charlie’s life continues in Christ. Death is not the end; it is the doorway to eternal life with Jesus.
4. Life Is Short
Charlie’s 31 years remind us of the brevity of life. The Bible says life is like the wind (Job 7:7), like grass that withers (1 Peter 1:24), like a flower that fades (Job 14:2), like a vapor that vanishes (James 4:14). We are here today and gone tomorrow.
That is why Jesus said in Matthew 10:38, “Whoever does not take up their cross and follow Me is not worthy of Me.” What matters is not how long we live, but how faithfully we live. Charlie’s life challenges us to live ready for eternity.
5. We Pray for His Family, His Organization, and Our Nation
In times like these, we turn to prayer. We pray for Charlie’s wife and family, that the Holy Spirit will comfort them. We pray for Turning Point USA, that God will raise up new voices to carry forward the mission Charlie began. And we pray for America, that this tragedy will not bring more division but instead spark revival.
God’s promise in 2 Chronicles 7:14 is still true: “If My people, who are called by My name, will humble themselves and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, forgive their sin, and heal their land.”
Final Word
Charlie Kirk’s death is tragic, but it is also a wake-up call. Persecution is real, but so is our God. Life is short, but eternity is long. Fear rises, but faith must rise higher. We grieve, but we grieve with hope. And we commit ourselves again to standing boldly for Jesus, no matter the cost.
May God comfort Charlie’s family, strengthen His church, and heal our nation.
