Fasting: How to Do It Correctly

Have you ever wondered what fasting is and how to do it correctly? The foundation of fasting is a response to a revelation of God’s mercy, love, and grace. It’s because of the revelation of who God is, that we offer our lives as a living sacrifice. It is an expression of our gratitude for what He has done.

In the Bible, Paul talks about mercy, righteousness, salvation, justification, and Jesus’ sacrifice.

Romans 12:1-2 says, “…offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God – this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – His good, pleasing and perfect will.”

This helps us to offer our lives in gratitude to God.

Fasting results in greater awareness and sensitivity, and through that increased awareness we can be purified

To fast “correctly,” we first have to present a living sacrifice, not dead, in order to be transformed in our minds and to know God’s perfect will. Offering our body means changing fleshly mindsets and actions. Through our dependence on His word and a constant fresh reliance, we are able to change our mindsets.

Starvation Is NOT Fasting.

In addition, starvation is not fasting. It is not for weight loss purposes or anything tied to physical or fleshly desires. It does not make one more righteous; instead, it results in greater awareness and sensitivity.

In addition, it creates a desire for continual purification. Read Daniels, Isaiah 58, and Matthew 6:16-18 to understand the heart of true fasting before the Lord.
