10 Steps to Break Curses

10 Steps to Break Curses

A spiritual prison (curse) is like a box. The devil makes you feel as though are free to do whatever you want but only within the limitations of the four walls. Many people have a sincere desire to quit smoking, stop falling into porn, or to stop drinking, but no matter how hard they resolve to stop, they can’t seem to. This is because they are in a spiritual prison, bound by entities that don’t want to to release them, or often, have a legal right to keep them in bondage.

God wants to disconnect you from the demons that are holding you captive. His desire is to open the prison doors where you find yourself in. I believe that as you go through these 10 steps, and apply them in your life, chains of bondage will be broken off of your life and you will be set free.

Steps to Break Curses

1. Understand the Scriptural foundation for freedom

In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace.

Ephesians 1:7

As you pursue your freedom, remember that Christ has paid for your life to be redeemed. Redemption is more than just forgiveness. You were purchased back from whatever used to own you, and Christ is now the one who owns your life. Your freedom is because of His sacrifice. That is the foundation that you must build your faith on. Freedom belongs to us, not because we are hurting, but because of the sacrifice of Jesus.

Another Scripture says,

Giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light. He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.

Colossians 1:12-14

This verse says “He has delivered” using the past tense. It was on the cross of Calvary that you were delivered from the power of darkness. The foundation of your freedom must come from understanding the truth that the Scripture reveals to us. Your deliverance might be about to manifest, but the foundation for your deliverance happened 2000 years ago.

Galatians also says,

Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”), that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

Galatians 3:13-14

We see again in this verse the word “redeemed” and we also know that our freedom was purchased on the cross.

This may cause people to wonder, so why then is there a need to pray for deliverance?

The Lord has defeated the enemy on the cross, but faith is required on our behalf to see it manifest. The same is true for our faith in Jesus. The Bible makes it clear that Jesus died for our sins 2000 years ago, but that doesn’t mean we’re automatically saved, that’s universalism which is clearly unscriptural.

Romans makes it clear by saying,

That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth, confession is made unto salvation.

Romans 10:9-10

We are called to confess that He is Lord and believe that He was raised, and we will be saved. The idea remains the same with our healing and deliverance–believe in what Jesus has already done for you.

2. Confess your faith in Christ

By this you know the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God, and every spirit that does not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not of God. And this is the spirit of the Antichrist, which you have heard was coming, and is now already in the world.

1 John 4:2-3

Before you can start breaking curses, not only do you need to know what Christ did for you on the cross, but it’s important to confess your faith in Him.

He is not just another prophet, an enlightened man, or a good teacher, you must believe in Him as your personal Lord and Savior.

3. Commit to obedience

And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.

Romans 6:13

Make up your mind that the reason you’re praying for deliverance is because you desire to be more available for the Lord. You desire freedom so you can serve God without any hinderance.

If you want to walk in freedom, make up your mind to serve God.

If before your deliverance, you spent time watching worldly movies, or even porn, make a commitment to spend that time praying and reading God’s Word.

4. Repent of any known sins

So they went out and preached that people should repent. And they cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many who were sick, and healed them.

Mark 6:12

This Scripture makes it clear that the disciples were casting out demons after they preached the repentance of sins.

You don’t need to go back and take inventory of past mistakes, but be aware of what the Lord highlights to you. Repent of any sins that the Holy Spirit might bring to your mind. If it is lying, stealing, or even abortion, whatever sin it may be, bring it before the Lord. Unrepented sins can be an open door that causes legal rights for demons to stay in your life.

5. Release all unforgiveness

And his master was angry and delivered him to the torturers until he should pay all that was due to him, so My heavenly Father also will do to you if each of you, from his heart, does not forgive his brother his trespasses.”

Matthew 8:34-35

Many people have demonic-rooted issues because of their lack of forgiveness.

If you hold on to bitterness satan will have access to you.

Bitterness, unforgiveness, and offense are your choice, but in choosing to hold on to them you are giving a right to the enemy to keep you bound.

The way to break away from bondage and curses is to examine yourself and release anything you are harboring in your heart.

By choosing to forgive, you are not justifying the act that caused you pain, you are simply choosing to not live bound by it. Someone might have affected your past, but God doesn’t want them to continue to affect your future–forgive.

Your freedom is more important than your feelings.

6. Renounce all contact with the occult, sorcery, witchcraft, oaths, demonic vows, demonic ceremonies, blood covenants, false gods, and false religions

But we have renounced the hidden things of shame, not walking in craftiness nor handling the word of God deceitfully, but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God.

2 Corinthians 4:2

If this segment applies to you, understand that renouncing these practices will provoke your freedom. Through renouncing you are deciding to break off the right the devil has over your life.

Renouncing is as simple as saying, “Lord, I renounce all contact with the occult, with…”

If you have made a convent, worshipped false idols, been in demonic ceremonies, dedicated to demons as a child, or had any involvement with occult practices, renounce that and break off any right you willingly gave to the devil.

7. Get rid of all accursed objects

Nor shall you bring an abomination into your house, lest you be doomed to destruction like it. You shall utterly detest it and utterly abhor it, for it is an accursed thing.

Deuteronomy 7:26

Go through your house and get rid of items that might be connected to the occult. Anything you find that was dedicated to Satan, get it out of your possession. That is often a contact point for the enemy in your life.

Things to get rid of:

  • Ouija boards
  • Dreamcatchers
  • Horoscopes
  • Porn magazines
  • Witchcraft books
  • Horror films
  • Crystals

8. Release yourself in the name of JESUS

Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.

Luke 10:19

Pray to release yourself from any generational curse. It’s as simple as saying a prayer, “I release myself from any curse in Jesus name.”

9. Expect the blessing of Abraham

That the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

Galatians 3:14

The key is to change your expectation. It may seem like just a simple prayer, but I want you to believe in the words that you just spoke and begin to change your expectations accordingly.

Expect that now you will be able to sleep through the night, except that you won’t keep getting a bad medical report. Begin to expect that things are going to change in your life in Jesus’ name.

Expectation is the breeding ground for miracles.

10. Confess God’s promise

This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. Joshua 1:8

Joshua 1:8

Not only do we expect miracles, but we declare God’s promises. Begin to find promises that are written in the Word of God, break them down, memorize them, and do not allow them to depart from your mouth.

In times of fear confess,

For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.

2 Timothy 1:7

In times of sickness declare,

…And by His stripes we are healed.

Isaiah 53:5

And in times of uncertainty say,

So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

Isaiah 41:10

Even after your deliverance, if symptoms come back, stand firm on what the Word of God says. Take the sword of the Spirit and come against the enemy in the name of Jesus. God wants you to live the life that He died for you to live.

Stand firm believing that freedom is yours through Christ.
